Art from the Arctic
NorskArt Celebrates its 5th Anniversary

NorskArt celebrates its 5th anniversary with its most exciting exhibition so far in fashionable Maverik Showroom, off Brick Lane.  The annual free event, being held this year from 6th -10th May, is a showcase celebrating the hottest art from Norwegian students working across the UK. They are gathering in London, under the slogan “Art from the Arctic”, to show their inimitable take on art today as Norwegians studying in British art institutions. The 26 artists will display works across all media from illustrations and art objects to photography and film.

This year’s exhibition will be arranged across two floors; starting with clean and brightly lit pieces following the line of contemporary Scandinavian art and design, working it’s way down to the lower floor where the work takes on the distinctive dark and colourful nature more typically associated with Norwegian culture. As such, the exhibition will be a one of a kind artistic experience with something of interest for everyone.

Among the exhibitors is Ivar Kvaal, who is presenting works from his series of landscapes entitled ‘Tabula Rasa’ which explores the viewer’s experience of Norway’s wild nature. He chose to shoot on Polaroid film as the images are affected by the landscapes and temperature in much the same way as humans are when experiencing the surroundings. Martine Wang was inspired by renowned Norwegian countryman and playwright Henrik Ibsen, who once said that “to be yourself, is to kill yourself”. Talking about her oil paintings of the inner-self, she says “People change; it’s a necessary consequence of being alive, but often you become trapped in self-illusions when your self-image can’t keep up with the changes, or when you simply suppress them for being atypical of yourself”.

NorskArt will be officially opened on Thursday 7th day at a launch evening with drinks and live music performed by a Norwegian/English duo.

NorskArt is a not-for-profit event supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London and ANSA – the Association of Norwegian Students Abroad.
