Norway's oil fund surges, now worth $396bn
Norway's massive oil fund surged in value to NOK 2.385bn or $396bn in the second quarter of this year - boosted by a surge in the value of global share prices - an increase of NOK 309bn since the end of the first quarter, in figures released on Friday by the central bank. Read more

Statoil claims subsea world record on Ormen Lange
Norway's state-owned oil and gas producer StatoilHydro is claiming a world first in subsea innovation, announcing that the world’s deepest hot tap operations on a pressurised pipeline have been performed on the Ormen Lange field in the Norwegian Sea during early August. Read more |

Aker Solutions profit up on big contracts
Super supplier-contractor Aker Solutions reported higher second-quarter profits on Thursday, and said its billion-dollar backlog built on a sub-sea upswing and big jobs had the company “well prepared to meet the global economic downturn”. Read more |

BG starts survey in Norwegian Sea
U.K.’s third largest producer of natural gas, BG Group, has started a seismic survey of its Norwegian Sea license as it expands beyond the North Sea into the Arctic. Read more |

Power line in place
The 13-kilometre submarine cable to carry electricity from the Hywind floating wind turbine has now been installed and tested in the sea north-west of Stavanger. Read more |

Marine Harvest ASA achieved an operational EBIT of NOK 257 million in the second quarter, compared to NOK 145 million in the corresponding quarter last year. Solid demand and tight supply led to strong prices. Read more |

Herring industry could save millions
Fish-processing industry could save energy worth tens of millions of kroner a year by adopting the results of recent research. A recent research report by SINTEF Energy Research and the Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL) points out that there is a huge potential for energy savings in Norwegian companies that specialise in processing dried fish and pelagic species such as herring and markerel, as well as in fish-farming. New record as 600,000 smolts transported in Norway
A FISHING company has just completed the transfer of the largest quantity of living salmon between two northern zone countries. The operation was carried out by Samherji's fish farming subsidiary Islandsbleikja when a ship docked at Kirkenes in northern Norway with 600,000 living salmon smolts worth around £650,000. Cermaq profit from higher feed and fish prices
Norwegian aquaculture and fish feed company, Cermaq ASA has reported a second quarter profit (EBIT pre fair value) of NOK 81.4 million (£8 million). This compares to a loss of NOK 31.2 million in the same quarter last year. Read more |

Starts of new homes in Norway drop 40% Y/Y Jun '09
Norwegian housing starts plunged 40% year-on-year to 1,500 in June 2009, preliminary figures by Statistics Norway showed today. Seasonally-adjusted, the number of housing starts totalled 1,420 in June 2009, down from 1,754 in the preceding month and from 2,345 a year earlier. Read more |

Key policy rate unchanged
As expected by most financial experts, Norges Bank’s Executive Board at its meeting Wednesday decided to keep the key policy rate unchanged at 1.25 per cent, stating that the financial market situation has improved. Read more

Strong decrease in Consumer Price Index
The Norwegian consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.6 per cent from June to July 2009, according to Statistics Norway. The prices of clothing and footwear together with airline fares contributed most to the decline. Read more |
